Termites

Here in Oregon we tend to face two main types of termites, those being the subterranean and dampwood termite. It is important to know the difference between the two. Termites are a serious problem and sometimes when you notice you have a problem, the damage is already done.

Subterranean Termite (Reticulitermes hesperus)

The subterranean termite is a foe that every homeowner needs to be aware of. Subterranean termites live in colonies in the soil and will build tube structures that will give them access to your house from the ground. They can do massive amounts of damage to a building and can cost the homeowner a large amount of money. Each nest is made up of different termites that each play their own role. There is the queen and the king, winged reproductive, soldiers, and the workers.

King & Queen- The king and queen can be found near the middle of the nest where it is the safest. Their main job is is producing eggs for the nest.

Soldiers- The soldiers main job is what it sounds like, they are there to protect the nest from dangers, the main one being ants.

Workers- The workers role is to provide food for the other termites. They build the nest and the tunnels and are the ones that can cause damage to your home.

Dampwood Termite

Dampwood termites live in a different setting compared to the subterranean termites. Dampwood termites live in damp wood, such as dead trees, stumps, logs and even can be found in your home where wet wood can be found. They also don't need the soil to be contacting the wood to enter the home like the subterranean termite does. The dampwood termites is the largest kind of termite in the United States. There are no chemical products needed to get rid of dampwood termites, but rather just removing the damp wood that they are nested in.

Termites vs. Carpenter Ants

Many people will confuse carpenter ants and termites for each other. One way to tell the difference is carpenter ants do not eat the wood, they just burrow into it. That means that if you see sawdust, it is a carpenter ant. Termites eat the wood as food so they will not leave signs such as sawdust on the ground.

Call a Professional

If you believe that you might have termites, it's important to call a professional to see if you do and create a plan to get rid of them. They are a problem that you want to stay ahead of, so make sure you seek professional help.
